On Wednesday, October 1 you were informed that I was given to accept the call you sent to me. Undoubtedly, besides wonderment, you also felt gladness. I would like to share with you how, after a way of struggle and letting go of Ede, the path has led to Lethbridge.
In the summer of 2013 we spent our vacation, for the first time, with our family in Canada. During that vacation we had a very nice time with our family. For that vacation I had sermons translated from the book “We shall go into the house of the Lord”, sermons about the Songs of Degrees (Hamaaloth) (which I had released for the church building in Ede). These translated sermons I then read from the pulpit in Lethbridge. Because we, as a family, had a good vacation, we thought to go to Canada once more. The consistory of Lethbridge could agree. That meant that I had to lead again in English. But reading translated sermons in 2013 gave no satisfaction. I looked more to the written letters than to the people. I therefore decided to try from a sermon outline (as also in The Netherlands) to preach. To that end, English lessons were necessary, which I followed in the past year.
This past summer we again had our vacation in Canada and preached the Sundays in Lethbridge. In the sermons I was very focused on speaking proper English. I also do not deny that the Lord has helped therein. However, on Sunday, August 17, the last service before we returned to the Netherlands, it was no longer the language, but I saw souls in their distress as sheep without a shepherd. In fact, not only that there was a need, but their need became my need. During the sermon I asked myself "what if you were the minister here?" The Lord gave in my heart the words from Psalm 72: 16a: "There shall be a handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon."
The following Wednesday we returned to The Netherlands. From then on this gave an unrest and conflict in my heart. My wife, our children, our parents who are in the evening of their lives. And besides, only three years in Ede. A congregation that is close to my heart and where we have it good and a place in the hearts of the members. I tried to push the thoughts of Lethbridge out of my mind. On Tuesday, September 16 the message came that I had received the call. The following two weeks there was much strife. Impossible from all sides. The Lord directed me to the text which sent me into His service 18 years ago. With this all objections were removed. I have also written this in the letter to the consistory of Lethbridge, with which I have confirmed the call.
On Wednesday, October 1, I could accept the call. Man would like all hindrances taken care of. How is the language, the bond with our children, our parents. But also the letting go of Ede. And yet, prayerfully looking up if the Lord will make all things well. As He speaks; "and I will bring the blind by a way that they knew not;"
I sincerely hope that the Lord will also care for Ede. At this time, a date of departure is not known. The visas for Canada must be requested and it may well take six months. Meanwhile it is my prayer that the Lord will bless the preaching for young and old. I hope that the Lord will bless the preaching of an unworthy servant.
